The Dangers of Not Getting Enough Sunlight

As well as making everything look nicer, sunlight is important for our health for a number of reasons. In this article, the team at Allegro Blinds are going to look at why the sun’s rays are so beneficial to us, and how blinds can help us get enough.

Health risks associated with inadequate sunlight exposure

Weaker immune system

Sunlight is one of best sources of vitamin D, and boosting our vitamin D intake helps to improve our immunity against illnesses like colds and the flu, as well as other infections. Without adequate sunlight, we can be more susceptible to illness.

Higher blood pressure

We have a chemical called nitric oxide that is stored in the top layer of our skin. When exposed to sunlight, this chemical reacts in a way that causes our blood vessels to widen. The oxide then moves into our bloodstream, which lowers our blood pressure. High blood pressure can be very dangerous, and prolonged periods with no exposure to sunlight can keep our blood pressure levels high.

Poor sleep

Getting regular sunlight in the morning is important in keeping our circadian rhythm in check. Our circadian rhythm is our body clock; it keeps us ticking over on a schedule, and without regular sunlight, it can be disrupted. This can lead to difficulties falling asleep and waking up as and when we should.

Weaker bones

Vitamin D helps boost our capacity to absorb calcium which, in turn, makes our bones healthier. Without the recommended amounts of sunlight, our bones do not get the benefit of additional calcium absorption.

Lower productivity

Where the workplace is concerned, natural light is a great booster of productivity. Exposure to sunlight helps us be more alert, and so a lack of natural light can lead to us feeling sleepy and perhaps unmotivated at our desks.

Blinds for increased sunlight exposure

There are, luckily, a number of blinds that are ideal for increasing your exposure to natural light.

Vision blinds, also known as day & night blinds, are fantastic for light control. Using a combination of translucent and opaque horizontal strips that can be used in varying combinations to allow light in at any time, without compromising on your privacy. For those with livable roof space, skylight blinds are also a great way to filter light without blocking it out completely.
